To my American friends.
No, this isn’t a scene from your riots.
This was from a riot that happened 7 years ago here in Singapore.
I know many of you are feeling lost and hopeless.
Every single day, you see people trying to destroy America.
And now, you see it literally being torn apart.
You might be wondering, “Is America truly that great?”
If so, how could something like this happen?
The answer is simple. Because the human condition itself, is universally flawed.
Singapore is a place where protesting is illegal. And racism, is also literally illegal.
And yet, we had a massive riot due to an Indian man being knocked down by a bus driver.
Point is, it doesn’t matter what kind of government you have, or how many rules you put in place, or what values you build your country upon.
You can literally make racism illegal.
But no amount of rules will change the fact that we humans are imperfect, and there will always be evil among us.
You can try to blame the evil on every race, every cop, every system, on society as a whole, but if you as an individual do not first take the responsibility to rid yourself of your own evil, then you are indeed, “part of the problem”.
That is why the first instinct is to shout ‘systemic racism!’
Better to blame society as a whole, than specific individuals.
Because once you put the responsibility on the individual, it means having to then take responsibility for your own shortcomings.
Yes, you can, and should make the system better.
But at the end of the day, there is no magic cure to evil.
The biggest mistake would be thinking you can make America perfect.
Even Singapore, the ‘almost perfect country’, is so, so, broken.
There is no such thing as utopia.
If you can’t even be perfect yourself, how do you expect an entire country to be perfect?
So as much as people don’t want to hear it, the best solution I can think of, is bringing back the Judeo-Christian values that America was founded upon.
When people have a perfect God to strive towards, that is when evil will start to fade away.
Will that ever happen? One can only pray.
